Salina Intermediate Highlights & Photos

April / May 2008

The 2008 Salina Intermediate Technology Camp was a huge success! Way to Go, Wildcats!

Message from Principal, Glenn Maleyko:

I am very proud of our staff and I am honored to be the principal of such a wonderful school with an outstanding faculty, student body and community. We have received outstanding reviews from participants during the three day technology camp.  The cultural shift has not only occurred at our school but it continues to escalate to new levels of excellence with a focus on student learning.  We are also making a dramatic impact on the district PLC model and technology integration program as individuals left with a great deal of inspiration and enthusiasm to bring back to their buildings.

This was an outstanding team effort with the implementation of our technology professional development camp and a great example of synergy(Stephen Covey’s 6th habit).

Message from Technology Committee Chair, Bob Attee:

This year’s Teacher Technology Training Camp has been our most successful professional development experience to date! Our success this year comes from our outstanding staff! Throughout the last three days, many participants have commented on what a great staff we have and how much they have been able to learn from our expertise and experience. Without everyone’s help, the energy and enthusiasm that was experienced during the tech camp would not have been possible.

AdvanceED Visit to Salina was a Great Success!

S alina Intermediate was one of the schools that were selected to host The NCA-AdvancED review team from the state level NCA committee. The experience was extremely positive and the two committee members that attended our school Dr. Sulieman Hamdan, and Mindy Renier were extremely impressed with the excitement, leadership and enthusiasm in our school. They met with several members of the Salina Intermediate Faculty, parent representatives and Salina students. Here are some of the comments that some of the students made during the interviews:

Students were asked for their thoughts on Salina, their understanding of their teacher's goals for them, and how they would rate their learning experiences at school.

The responses given were incredibly positive. Students talked about being able to "build relationships" with their teachers and feeling that their teachers truly cared for them. They stated that their teachers "help us get through obstacles." Teachers find a "fun way to teach (i.e. reading part of a text and getting up in front of class to teach what was read)." Students mentioned howcreative Salina teachers are and how they can make boring lessons interesting and appealing. They talked about becoming more "fluent" and having improved "comprehension" skills through all the reading and writing that teachers offer in all their classes. They mentioned things like literature circles, technology in their instruction, students teaching each other, and teachers who are willing to stay after school and tutor them. Students sounded grateful to have the experiences you all offer them and a number called our school the "best" in the district.

The 2007 Salina Intermediate Technology Camp was a huge success!

Message from Superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools, Dr. John Artis:

May I add my congratulations to the entire Salina Intermediate staff and student body for their involvement, along with various members of our district staff, in this wonderful example of finding our own experts right in our back yard. We lead by example, and there were lots of leaders with this effort. Excellent job as usual.

Message from Technology Committee Chair, Bob Attee:

As I reflect on the past 3 days, it has been a highly successful Teacher Technology Training camp that we have offered this year at Salina Intermediate largely in part to the outstanding dedication of our staff.  Based on the evaluations of our participants and the overall experience that I have seen, we have been able to provide a high quality professional development that has left a positive, lasting impression on so many of our participants.

Here’s what participants had to say about the Salina Tech Camp:

I want to thank you and your staff for three wonderful days!   It was great to have the opportunity to network with teachers from other districts, schools, and disciplines.  I learned a lot and have so much to share with my colleagues.

Although I was impressed with your technology at Salina, what really left me in awe was your staff.  It was a joy to hear everyone compliment others.  Your ability to tap into the strengths of your staff is truly impressive.  Salina is a Model school when it comes to Technology and the Salina staff is the best Model for a PLC that I have ever seen!

I would like to nominate the entire Salina staff for the Wildcat Award!

Thank you again for your support.  I look forward to the ATA Technology Academy in June.
